CITY SCALE DELIVERY MAPPING

NYC DELIVERY DRONE

In many science fiction movies, drone delivery is a common scene. Taking the advantages of lightness, vapidness, and extreme weather resistance, drones will perhaps replace deliverymen and become an indispensable part of the logistics system in the future.

In this context, a special kind of drone dedicated to the delivery of medicines and mail was invented, starting from the drone basements, taking required medicines and mails from various pharmacies and post offices, delivering the items to customers in a short time.

DRONE PROTOTYPE

PROTOTYPE CATALOG

The drone prototype is constituted of three parts, Probe, Connector, and Propellers. The Probe will detect the surroundings, assisting the drone to avoid obstacles and identify important objects. Connector functions as an articulator that combine all the parts together. Propellors provide propulsion for the drone, enabling it to fly in any direction.

This catalog shows the various possibilities of drones assembled from different parts. By applying the transformation of rotation, scaling, and mirroring, drones with different performance advantages are created. Some have more powerful propulsion systems; some are capable of carrying heavy loads. Each type of drone will deliver the goods in different scenarios.

This mapping shows the locations of drone basements in various areas of New York, and the range of post offices and pharmacies that each basement is responsible for delivering. Each point records the specific information of the post office and pharmacy, please hover the mouse over it to check.

NEIGHBORHOOD SCALE DELIVERY MAPPING

This mapping zooms into the specific neighborhoods in upper Manhattan, showing the route of the drone in detail, from the basement bypassing various obstacles to the pharmacy and post office to pick up the goods. Each route is the shortest path calculated by grasshopper.

NEW YORK CITY METAL PAWN DRONE

New York City’s first pawn drone searches the city’s piers for metal and valuable elements that can be either recycled as a form of combatting water pollution but also exchanged for monetary gain, the money is invested into the NYC Sustainability Program.

Similar to an oceanic Roomba the Pawn Drone seeks to collect both garbage and treasures from the cityscape, the metal is taken to nearby parks where recycling units are found, the remaining metals are taken to a series of plazas with trade markets and pawn shops.

The following map below indicates a route made by the Pawn Drone in Red Hook, Brooklyn, starting by collecting metals at the piers and then dropping them off at the neighborhood parks and plaza such as Red Hook Plaza and Red Hook Recreational Park. This specific location is popular in finding copper and silver metals during the summer seasons which can be pawned for $50-$200 depending on the condition/ware of the material. All other metals have been dropped off at the recycling bins in the parks.

Hy(dro)ne

Want to know if it’s worth walking all the way to the pool to fight off the blistering summer heat? Why risk a bad experience at a pool? Cold water can be delivered straight to you! Just carry with you a reusable water bottle, flag the Hy(dro)ne, and cold water will be filled, ready for you to cool down.

USPS Robomail Delivery

In the age of WeChat and Messenger, the USPS risks falling into complete irrelevance. “Snail mail” does not sate our current expectations for instantaneous communication. But on the flip side, no text message can replace grandma’s cursive handwriting. Enter the USPS’s new multiscalar drone delivery fleet.

At the scale of NYC, hyperspeed jet drones facilitate the rapid transfer of mail between post office locations. And at the community scale, local courier bots (“parkbots”) serve as mobile mailboxes, traveling between local parks and post offices collecting and “hand” delivering letters.

Seeds Delivery and Irrigation Drone

In hot days, waiting for the bus under the bus shelter is a pain. So, in this imaginary future, this drone will replace insects, go to the park to collect seeds, plant, and irrigate on the bus shelter, so that we have a better waiting space and urban environment.

On the map, the red dots indicate the location of the bus shelter, while the blue dots are the drinking fountains, most of which are in parks. Therefore, the task of the drone is to go to these drinking fountains to collect water, but also to take seeds, pollen, and then transport it to the bus shelter. These routes are the solid red lines. And because some routes are too long, it is not suitable to use short-range drones for transportation, so the orange dash lines are those long-distance drone routes for inter-regional transportation. At the same time, the blue dash lines are the route that collects excess water. These drinking places are far from the bus station and are not suitable for delivery by small drones. Larger drones can take these resources to further irrigate and even cool down New York City.
